I am the pen,

    without me this paper

    cannot live.

Paperback writer

Spike Milligan with his lifetime achievement award at the 11th annual British Book Awards in 1999. He wrote volumes of autobiography including Adolf Hitler, My Part in His Downfall and Mussolini, His Part in My Downfall, as well as books of "silly" poetry for children. Other books sported such titles as Indefinite Articles and Scunthorpe, Floored Masterpieces with Worse Verse, Sir Nobonk and the Terrible, Awful, Dreadful, Naughty Nasty Dragon.

A number of Spike books recently came into my possession which had previously been owned by one of Spikes life long friends Gunner Bob "Dipper" Dye. When Bob sadly died in the mid 90's they were passed to another of Spikes friends Stan Franklin - better known as the Mirror cartoonist 'Franklin'.

Stan also sadly passed away in February 2004 and via this website and Stans brother the books came to me.

One of the books is of added interest because there is a hand written account by Bob "Dipper" Dye, regarding Spike getting wounded in Italy. This is what he wrote -

This was written on the inside front cover of Alfred Drapers The Story of The Goons. I found it interesting and thought I would share it with you.

The dedication from Monty His Part in My Victory is below

As you can see it's signed by Bob "Dipper" Dye, Spike as Gunner. S. Milligan and also by Stan Franklin and has taken pride of place in my collection. Apparently Bob got the nickname "Dipper" because of the way he dipped his head when he was playing darts.

The Goons The Story

MacDrown

Urgle urgle urgle
Whatever is that sound?
Urgle urgle urgle!!
It's coming from that mound!!
Gurgle gurgle gurgle!
That's urgle with a G!!
The sound that people make I hear
When drowning in the sea!
MacGurgle hic! MacGurgle hic!
Ah, now it's clear to me
A Scotsman drowning in a whiskey vat,
A happy death and free!!
