Here's the story of how this cross found its way onto eBay (I don't think it sold)

This is the marker made for Spike Milligans grave. Which was never collected.

This Cross was found in an empty office of a closed down company

The factory was about to be taken over by another business, the owner of the cross (now being 62 + ) has, since his childhood ( i.e. when the first GOON SHOW came into being ) been an avid collector of goon material, but in particular the life and times of Spike Milligan.

On finding the cross and knowing the new owners of the factory, I explained my desire to own it and of course why. Almost immediatly the new owner gave me the cross knowing that it would be cared for . That was in July 2004

As it happened I knew the previous owner and his wife ,Mark & Dian Walters , and subsequently was told how the cross came to be made.

Apparently:-

Mark saw a picture of the late Spike's grave in a national news-paper, he was taken aback by the fact that there was 'only' a bucket of flowers at the head of the grave.

It appears that he contacted Spike's family and suggested that he would make a cross for Spike and would let them know when he completed it , to which he did.  But , after some considerable time the cross was never collected.

In an interview Spike was asked " What would you like as an epitaf?"

to which he replied " I TOLD YOU I WAS ILL"

Details of the cross:

Height is 4 Ft (1220 mm)

Width is  2 Ft (610 mm)

Thickness is 4.8 Inches ( 65 mm)

It is made of 'Welsh Green Oak'

The Celtic Motifs and wording have been routed out to a depth of approx. 2 mm

All joints are pegged , the finish appears to have been waxed , and the grain in the oak is superb.

Since the present owner has had the cross in his presents , he has lovingly cared for it.

But 'needs must'
