In Memorium: Spike Milligan « on: February 28th, 2002, 4:43pm »
The world lost a genius yesterday when Spike Milligan died from Kidney failure at his home in Rye, East Sussex.
Voted in a BBC poll as the funniest man of the last 1000 years, Spike was a genius in the truest sense of the word. Setting new limits on how silly comedy could be, he founded modern surreal comedy, heavily influencing the work of artists such as Monty Python's Flying Circus and Eddie Izzard.
His poem, 'On the Ning Nang Nong' was voted his best work by fans the world over.
On The Ning Nang Nong
On the Ning Nang Nong Where the Cows go Bong! And the Monkeys all say Boo! There's a Nong Nang Ning Where the trees go Ping! And the tea pots Jibber Jabber Joo. On the Nong Ning Nang All the mice go Clang! And you just can't catch 'em when they do! So it's Ning Nang Nong! Cows go Bong! Nong Nang Ning! Trees go Ping! Nong Ning Nang! The mice go Clang! What a noisy place to belong,
A great, great man, the "Grand-daddy of Comedy" will be sorely missed.
i like the gofongo best...
for those of you who are not aquainted with this particular milliganimal...
The gofongo, if you please, is a fish with singing knees and a tail that plays the spanish clarionet!
he has toes that whistle tunes and explode! like toy balloons. hence his many, many visits to the vet.
the gofongo, when he likes, swallows jam and rusty bikes, orange pips and treacle pudding boiled in glue.
he loves chips with rusty nails and can swallow iron rails that is why they cannot keep one in a zoo.
but! gofongo as a pet would cause panic and regret. people tried it and were nearly driven balmy.
for, once inside a house, he screams, 'i'm a jewish mouse.' then he runs away - and joins the arab army!
...ace!
Oh God I had no idea. I think they refuse to tell us some things in Wales(conspiracy theory time), coz I have been watching the news but...wow. I respect Spike Milligan not really for his poetry, but for his wonderfully witty character, which shone through even after he became ill and confused.
A minutes silence. I shall turn off my cd for a bit in respect.
I still love the quote being used in memory of his death. I just think it is a really nice expression:
"The echoes of forgotton laughter"
i just think it is realy profound and cool. Oh yeah and Rest in peas Mr Milligan
"I wake up in the morning, put on my face. The one that's gonna get me through another day. Doesn't really matter - how i feel inside - this life is like a game sometimes"
Spike Milligan was more than just a comedian. He did seemingly endless work for charity and numerous other bits in society.
I may only be young, but I can fully appreciate that Spike Milligan was/is probably the funniest man that will ever live on this planet.
sadly i was never really aware of his work, but i knew of spike milligan and knew of the joy and laughter he brought to people.
I must go down to the sea again To the lonely sea and the sky I left my vest and socks there I wonder if they're dry. Spike Milligan
Sellers: Is that a Cambridge tie you're wearing? Milligan: Yea Sellers: You....you went to Cambridge?....What were you doing there? Milligan: Buying a tie.
he was indeed a funny guy
A man touched by pain and anguish, here's some examples of the more serious Spike:
Manic Depression
The pain is too much A thousand grim winters grow in my head In my ears the sound of the coming dead All seasons All sane All living All pain. No opiate to lock still my senses Only left, the body locked tenses
(written in St. Luke's Hospital, psychiatric ward, 1954)

We've come a long way said the Cigarette Scientist as he destroyed a live rabbit to show the students how it worked
He took its heart out plugged ut unto an electric pump that kept it beating for nearly two hours
I know rabbits who can keep their hearts beating for nearly seven years
And look at the electricity they save.
